SOLEY FAQ – frequently asked questions
What is Soley, what added value does it offer and how quickly can success be expected? At first, new and initially disruptive solutions raise more questions than they answer. Our FAQs are here to provide clarity!
What added value does Soley provide?
The complexity and scope of their product portfolio is a critical challenge for more and more companies. This is where potential savings totalling millions are hidden. However, analysing this potential is time-consuming and developing as well as maintaining the necessary tools is laborious and expensive.
Our scalable solutions therefore tackle the core of the challenge - the product: With the help of product mining, all relevant relationships between products, customers, components and suppliers are visualised. Once potentials and risks have been reviewed, measures for realising specific improvements can be implemented quickly and easily within the team.

How experienced is Soley?
Soley GmbH was founded as a spin-off of the Chair of Product Development at the Technical University of Munich. With founders from the fields of mechanical engineering and IT, an international team of engineers, data scientists and software developers as well as a select group of institutional investors and business angels, we are ideally positioned.
Where increasing complexity is slowing down exisiting processes, our customers such as Viessmann Climate Solutions and ebm-papst rely on our solutions on a daily basis. We know how to digitalize and scale complexity expertise effectively.

Is Soley just another BI tool?
Conventional BI tools and the Soley software can both analyse and graphically present large amounts of data. However, what puts our solution ahead of these tools is our ability to not only deliver ready-made, industry-standard analysis workflows, but also to enable digitalised decision-making processes. Soley helps companies streamline coordination processes and drive the implementation of measures in the long-term. With Soley, analyses become a living, data-driven process that can be transferred directly into business practice.
Another key difference lies in the technology: while conventional BI tools often use multidimensional data models, Soley works with modern technologies. These are specially optimised for highly interconnected data, such as that relating to the product portfolio, and are therefore significantly more efficient. For example, any dependencies from suppliers to customers can be easily mapped and navigated across complex bills of materials.
In contrast to BI tools, which are limited to analysing and graphically processing data, Soley goes one step further: our software combines analysis results with clearly defined, actionable processes that help companies to make quick and well-founded decisions. Of course, both BI tools and Soley can process and visualise large amounts of data. But while this is the goal with BI tools, with Soley it merely forms the basis for a more comprehensive and practical solution.
How does Soley help during a crisis?
Liquidity bottlenecks, failures in the supplier network, the wrong items in stock - the COVID19 crisis has shown how quickly external disruptions can affect a company's own value creation. What makes it especially challenging is the limited time available to analyze the complex consequences of far-reaching decisions.
This is precisely where Soley comes in and simulates the effects along the entire value chain - from the supplier to the customer basket - across the entire product portfolio. This enables companies to always tackle the right issues, even under time pressure.

Can't you build your own software (or have it built)?
In theory, yes, that would be possible. However, modern cloud-based solutions such as Soley have a decisive advantage:
The software has already proven itself with a number of customers. By working with recurring challenges, we already have tried and tested benchmarks and best practices.
In addition, you benefit from our many years of experience and thus specific and application-related business logic that is fully integrated into the algorithms. This allows our customers to benefit immediately from optimised processes and ready-made solutions, which guarantees a significantly faster time-to-value.
Our speed advantage is reflected in extremely short implementation times, fast release cycles and continuous improvements. Compared to home-grown analyses, our solution is not only more efficient and cost-effective, but also much more reliable, easily scalable and significantly less risky.
What is the difference to a consulting?
Consultancy and software solutions are a bit like a dentist and brushing your teeth: One cannot and will not replace the other.
According to the analogy, the continuous maintenance of the product portfolio with the help of Soley is more sustainable and more favourable than waiting for an acute emergency. If this does occur, it is necessary to fall back on a consultancy that is usually limited in time and focusses on specific ‘problems’.
Our aim is to support companies in their development away from ‘pain-driven’ reactions towards continuous, forward-looking action. With the help of our intuitive and scalable software solution, you can drive forward the maintenance and improvement of your product portfolio in the long term and act more quickly in crisis situations.
If you are unable to mobilise sufficient resources for extensive projects, we are happy to work with consulting partners. Together, we can lead our customers out of the acute crisis situation and help them achieve a sustainable and risk-reduced portfolio future.
How quickly can results be expected?
At the start of the collaboration, we discuss the focus, the scope of our standard solutions and any useful customisations and additions. Our standard solution (including customising components) provides a quick, data-based overview of your product portfolio. Based on the results, a prediction can be made about the achievement of initial successes, and discussions can be held regarding the next logical steps towards an excellent product portfolio.

How much will the solution cost?
The costs for access to the cloud services of our software solution are dependent on a few factors, such as
- Company size and complexity of the product portfolio
- Solution scope or area of application (e.g. portfolio excellence or supply chain resilience)
Prioritising the specific pain points and evaluating them together has proven successful. This results in a clear picture of which analysis modules deliver the fastest ROI for the company and effectively contribute to strategic goals.
Only when significant potentials emerge in your favour does a long-term collaboration really make sense.

What is the best time to start?
Clearly: the sooner, the better.
Inefficiencies in the product portfolio permanently block resources and cost money. This results in a substantial competitive disadvantage, which is reflected in declining margins and a slower time-to-market. For this reason, we do everything we can to realise relevant potential as quickly as possible together with our customers. This ensures an early, high ROI and creates room for further improvements in the future.
How long will the implementation take?
Thanks to a highly standardised data model and intelligent technology, our standard solution is usually implemented over the course of 3 months. This already includes several iterations (sprints) for data validation, customising and user training. All in all, it is a very lean implementation project in which the majority of effort is on Soley's side.
Within a few weeks, the first concrete results will be visible, and you will be empowered to work independently and implement measures.
How time-consuming is the data provision?
The data requirements for our solutions are clearly defined and typically involve only a single-digit number of person-days, resulting in minimal effort for internal IT. Depending on the scope, customer orders, product data, component suppliers, or bills of materials are strategically focused.
The exact data requirements are coordinated together, and the initial analysis results are jointly validated. If additional aspects need to be included in the analysis, they can be quickly integrated into the system, depending on the associated data collection effort.
